FRanZois came out with some very nice ideas again:
The first is tying some very cute unweighted Zonker patterns to imitate some baitfish ( dans ce cas les Lamproies). And they are tied on tubes to change hooks.
To keep it simple we’ll stick to thinking of normal streamer patterns for this post. So far there was, besides some nicely tied Zonkers, nothing new. The tricky part is how to get the flies right down to the fishes mouths. Sinking lines help, but often fail to get down long enough or if they rally reach the bottom you will end up in a lot of snagged and lost flies.
Now what is he doing to get the flies down and catch and catch. What he does is rigging his streamers with a modified “drop shot rig” style.
For this rig, it is essential to tie the fly on the leader with a Palomar knot. Like this:
You can rig the fly like this.
Big advantages of this rig style is that u can add as much lead as u can handle. You can determine the depth where the streamer is fishing by simply pulling the splitshots up to the fly or down from it.
And a very important fact is that a fish who is taking the fly does not take against any resistance of a directly weighted lure, which makes them fish taking them flies a little bit longer in their mouths. Hopefully long enough to set the hook.
I really liked this idea and will check it out as soon as possible.
Thanks to FranZois “the thinker” for sharing….but not too much thinking, please. It’s too dangerous (for the fish).
